This week I have been very busy trying to get caught up on a lot of yard work.  Last year, I feel behind with the gardens and landscaping due to the fact that I was 9 months pregnant in the spring and then I had a small infant all summer.  This year I am playing catch-up and there is a lot to do!

These are my front perennial beds. As you can see, a lot of the plants need to be split and thinned out.

I pulled out most of my invasive daisies and Black-Eyed Susans and put down a layer of mulch.  Monday I hope to apply some Preen to help with the weeds.

Fresh sugar snap peas and the Egyptian onion tops ready to plant or eat.

On Thursday, I harvested my first crop of sugar snap peas.  I also was making pea soup and realized that I did not have any onions.  Trying to be resourceful, I headed out to my garden to see what I could use in their place. I decided I would try putting in Egyptian onions instead of a regular onion. I picked two Egyptian onions and discovered that that was more than I actually needed.  The onions had grown so big! I had just moved the plants last year to that part of the garden and never expected them to grow so much. My son is four and the onion was as tall as he and that does not included the 4” the broke off in the ground. Amazing!

With the hot weather that we have had this past week, my garlic decided that it was time to go to seed. Good thing my neighbor came over and told me that his had all gone to seed. I always forget that I need to pick off the tops!  I saved the tops and put them in the refrigerator to cook with in the next couple of days.

Despite the severe weather we had earlier this week, everything in the garden seems to be doing well.  The hail did not seem to kill anything except one lone eggplant seedling.

The forecasters are saying that next week we will be having on and off rain.  Quite honestly, I’m looking forward to a little break from all the yard work but I know that when the sun does come back out, the weeds will be out in full force!
