For the past few weeks, we have been working in school through the Colonial American time period and the life of George Washington. This is my eldest son’s favorite time periods! I use the Abeka curriculum for all of our school. However, I do not like the emphasis that they put on memorization of facts, times and places, etc. My general approach and goal with homeschooling is to instill a love for learning in my children and allowing them to learn how to learn on their own. One of the ways that I have found useful in cultivating that love is to study certain time periods as they excite the kids. Right now, we are in the Colonial American time period. One of my favorite books is written by Genevieve Foster. There are four books in this collection.
Right now, we are reading through George Washington’s World. It is composed of many short stories of history throughout the world during different periods of George Washington’s Life. It begins with George Washington as a boy. Then it moves to when he was a soldier, then a farmer, a commander, a citizen and then finally a president.
Each short stories is only a few pages and it allows for great reading out loud. Every morning, we all gather together, ages 2 up to 11, and sit down to read approximately 10 pages. It is engaging, informative, and easy to understand.
As a mom, I am thoroughly enjoying reading it out loud to my kids. I always wondered what was happening in the world while America was being built. This book answer that question!
